Instructions:
Prepare the Fabric:
Wash and iron your fabric before starting.
Decide on the dimensions for your bag. A common size is about 15 inches wide by 18 inches tall for the main bag, with 2-inch-wide straps.
Cut the Fabric:
Cut two rectangles of equal size for the main body of the bag. These will be the front and back panels of your bag.
Cut two long strips for the straps. Make them about 2 inches wide and the desired length for your straps (usually around 24 inches each).
Optional: Cut a small square for a pocket if you want to add one.
Sew the Straps:
Fold each strap in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other.
Sew along the long edge, leaving the ends open.
Turn the straps right side out, press them flat with an iron, and topstitch along each side to create a finished look.
Sew the Pocket (Optional):
Fold the top edge of the pocket down twice to create a clean edge.
Pin the pocket to the front panel of the bag, about 2-3 inches from the top edge.
Sew around the sides and bottom of the pocket, leaving the top open.
Assemble the Bag:
Place the two main fabric panels right sides together.
Pin the sides and bottom edges.
Sew along the sides and bottom with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Reinforce the stitching at the beginning and end.
Clip the corners to reduce bulk.
Create the Boxed Corners:
To give the bag some depth, open up the corners and pinch them flat so the side seam aligns with the bottom seam. This will create a triangular shape.
Sew across the triangle about 1 inch from the point.
Trim the excess fabric.
Attach the Straps:
Pin the straps to the top edge of the bag, about 3 inches apart from each other.
Sew the straps in place by sewing a square with an "X" in it for added strength.
Foldable Design:
To make the bag foldable, you can fold it in half (front to back) and then fold it again from the bottom up, so the straps are on top. Secure it with Velcro or buttons if desired.
Finish and Customize:
Trim any loose threads and give your bag a final press with the iron.
You can personalize your bag by adding decorations, embroidery, or fabric paint if you like.
